A new year means New Year\u2019s resolutions for many people. Sadly, about 80% of resolutions fail by the end of January. When we consider goals, we often think of monthly, quarterly, or yearly goals. Sometimes we think ahead to a three-year or five-year goal, but have you ever considered thinking longer term? For instance, what would your one-hundred-year goal be? It\u2019s an important\u2014and perhaps scary\u2014goal to consider because it\u2019s an objective beyond your life. When setting goals, personally or for your interiorscape business, here is a process that can help.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Aligning New Year\u2019s Resolutions With Your Legacy<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Starting with a goal for your legacy really puts into perspective what will happen each day, but I believe most New Year\u2019s resolutions fail because they simply aren\u2019t important enough to our legacies to compel us to achieve them. Whether the goal is improving client satisfaction on an interiorscape project, refining workflow, losing weight, or spending more time with friends or family, if it doesn\u2019t contribute to our legacy, then it likely won\u2019t happen because it\u2019s not compelling enough to stick it out. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The first time we think about our legacy, it’s difficult to even articulate what we want to do. One great place to start is to consider your daily or weekly activities and ask, \u201cWould this be consistent with my hundred-year goal, even though I\u2019m not sure what that is yet?\u201d There are many moments in daily life where I can say, \u201cI\u2019m not sure exactly what I want my legacy to be, but I know for sure that this activity won\u2019t contribute to it.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For those working in built environments, especially interiorscapers, legacy often shows up in the spaces designed or cared for\u2014how they uplift people, improve well-being, or bring nature into someone\u2019s day without them even realizing it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Setting Goals Through the Five Areas of Well-Being<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Once we\u2019ve established some legacy context, it becomes much easier to set compelling one-year, three-year, and five-year goals. I prefer to create New Year’s goals in each of Gallup\u2019s five elements of well-being<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Here are the five areas of life to consider<\/strong>:<\/h4>\n\n\n\n
    \n
  • Career well-being:<\/em> What do I do each day for work? Do I enjoy it, and does it play to my strengths?<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • Social well-being: <\/em>Do I have strong relationships and love in my life?<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • Financial well-being:<\/em> Do I have the economic resources to do what I want to do in life, personally and professionally?<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • Physical well-being:<\/em> Do I have good health and energy to live life each day?<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • Community well-being:<\/em> Am I engaged with the area in which I live or causes I care about?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n

    Considering goals across all five areas is key because they are interdependent and inseparable from each other.\u00a0Pursuing goals in one area while ignoring the others will lead to declining overall well-being and is another reason why many fail.\u00a0This is because to achieve anything, we must prepare to give up something else. Therefore, good goal setting will involve not only creating clear outcomes for what success looks like (specific, measurable, and time-bound goals) but also intentionally considering what will be sacrificed for the achievement of the goal.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    For interiorscapers and interiorscape business owners, this step also helps clarify how goals translate into the daily realities of client work, maintenance schedules, staffing, and personal bandwidth. It allows us to consider the actual work that needs to be done on a monthly, weekly, and daily basis, as well as our capacity to put in that effort.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    As we set these goals more intentionally, it\u2019s important to think about the obstacles that may come up and how we\u2019ll handle them when they do. We may choose to identify key strengths we can leverage, accountability partners or coaches to help, or simply prepare to reset our mindset to get back on track.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Building a Mindset That Supports Your Legacy<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

    Finally, we need to consider our affirmations and daily beliefs. What are some positive, short mantras we can repeat to ourselves about what we\u2019re working to accomplish? Science has repeatedly proven that self-image is key to what one accomplishes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    It can feel scary to take on a truly challenging and impactful goal. <\/strong>When I first started running marathons for charity (weighing 348 pounds and having never run a single mile in my life), my coach taught me, \u201cYou have what it takes, but it will take everything you\u2019ve got.\u201d Embracing the challenge, considering my legacy, and having a plan is what has allowed me to complete two Boston marathons and one Chicago marathon while raising over $50,000 for vulnerable children around the world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    For 2026, I hope that you\u2019ll set ambitious goals\u2014both personally and within your interiorscape work\u2014to help change the world, even if only for a single person.\u00a0And I believe <\/strong>if you do more than just make a resolution and truly embark on a goal-setting journey, you\u2019ll accomplish anything you dream.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
