In the past, when I had an event that required large trees, I called Bob. I had his information written in a notebook, and if I had lost it, he would have been hard to track down because he only did business through word of mouth. His inventory was mainly six- to eight-foot ficus trees, which he would deliver to and pick up from events. I admired the simplicity of his business, and I often wonder if he still does it. Running a plant rental business requires a bit more strategy now, but the opportunity is still there for those willing to put in the effort.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Today, surviving solely on ficus tree rentals would be difficult. However, adding plant rental services as a side business can be a simple and profitable extension of an interiorscape company. If you\u2019re interested in starting a plant rental side business, here are important points to consider.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Basic Requirements for a Plant Rental Business<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

If your interiorscape company has an inventory of attractive foliage in varying heights, decorative plant containers<\/a>, a box truck, and staff who can physically move heavy products, then you have all the basic components needed to get started. If you don\u2019t have the necessary items, don\u2019t worry. With the right profit margin, you can source plants and containers, as well as rent a vehicle for the job if needed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For instance, I don\u2019t keep landscape material on hand, but I often purchase items\u2014such as spiral junipers\u2014at wholesale costs for wedding rentals and charge accordingly to ensure the initial rental covers my investment. If I never rent the topiaries again, I still make a profit. In addition, I can either use the plants myself or sell them. Structuring pricing so costs are recovered quickly helps keep a plant rental business financially sustainable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Keeping It Simple With Decorative Plant Containers<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

There\u2019s been one instance in my rental experience that didn\u2019t require decorative planters. And while it\u2019s important to have plant containers readily available, it can get overwhelming if you have a large selection for a client to choose from. I find it best to keep a supply of simple black plant containers on hand in the standard medium (10\u201d\u201312\u201d) and large (14\u201d\u201316\u201d) sizes. I include these planters in the rental price.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If the client wants a different color or style, I offer that at an additional charge, which covers my purchase cost. This approach keeps inventory manageable while allowing flexibility for custom requests. Woven baskets, in neutral shades, are another inexpensive option. The downside of woven baskets, when compared to commercial plastic containers<\/a>, is that with repeated use, baskets break down. The durability of plastic containers is going to provide a greater profit in the long term.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Marketing Your Plant Rental Services<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Social media has made marketing to a specific audience relatively easy, but capturing appealing photos\u2014which requires time and effort\u2014is a must for successful advertising. High-quality images<\/a> of staged plants at events, offices, or entryways help potential clients visualize how plant rentals can transform their spaces.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

An eye-catching picture combined with a few lines of information is usually effective at grabbing attention, and platforms like Instagram are great for showcasing plant rental work. Maintaining a simple online presence, such as a website or Google Business profile, can also help clients discover your services when searching for plant rentals in their area.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In addition to leveraging social media, expanding your network is equally important. Networking with companies that handle special events can drastically increase your customer base. Large florists in your area will have the greatest number of your target audience, and building relationships with local floral designers is like having an outside sales force.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

To create the perfect atmosphere for weddings, for example, florists are often tasked with camouflaging venue areas or designing more private outside spaces. However, most florists don\u2019t provide large foliage, which is needed in these circumstances to create barriers and enhance spaces. This is where plant rentals come in handy, and if you have a good relationship with florists in your area, you may get a spot on a venue\u2019s preferred vendor list, widening your rental opportunities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Also, visiting different locations to discover how your foliage can enhance the venue\u2019s customers\u2019 experience is a great way to sell your service and make event coordinators remember you. Event planners, corporate offices, and commercial venues can all become repeat clients when they know reliable plant rental services are available.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If you don\u2019t mind giving up some of your weekends and working under time constraints, a plant rental side business can be very lucrative. For interiorscape companies, offering plant rental services is a practical way to generate additional revenue while making use of existing plant inventory, containers, and design expertise. It can also introduce your business to new clients and event opportunities that lead to long-term relationships.
