Try These Stylish Dressing Options"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"page-intro\">I\u2019ve been in this industry for over fifteen years now and I have to say, I\u2019m getting bored with using the same old gray Spanish moss as a top dressing.\u00a0While there is nothing wrong with covering the exposed soil\u00a0Spanish moss, there should be more options out there to give our plants the finishing touch.<\/p>\n<p>Here are three stylishly different\u00a0solutions\u00a0for hiding dirt.<\/p>\n<h2>Reindeer Moss<\/h2>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-6776\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newprocontainers.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Reindeer-Moss-Small-011-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"Reindeer Moss\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" \/>I am currently in love with\u00a0<em>Cladonia rangiferina<\/em>, better known as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newprocontainers.com\/products\/reindeer-moss\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">reindeer moss<\/a>. It\u2019s spongy, soft and less costly\u00a0to use than the traditional Spanish variety. For higher-end containers or dish gardens, my favorite is the lime green tinted moss. It gives the container a pop of color while still being neutral enough not to clash with most interior d\u00e9cor.<\/p>\n<p>If you are looking for\u00a0something bold, reindeer moss is a great option. It comes in a variety of eye-catching colors such as\u00a0red, purple, blue or black to fit any creative design.<\/p>\n<h2>Rocks<\/h2>\n<p>Another great top dressing alternative is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newprocontainers.com\/products\/faux-landscaping-rocks\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">landscaping rocks<\/a>. Rockafillers, which are actually\u00a0artificial rocks composed of recycled plastic, are made\u00a0to mimic the smooth rounded stones found in river beds. They are available in seven natural colors and vary in size.\u00a0The\u00a0Rockafiller&#8217;s\u00a0lightness is a huge advantage over the real thing.\u00a0I\u2019ll take carrying a bag of these babies over river rocks any day.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_6946\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.newprocontainers.com\/brand\/rockafiller-faux-rocks.html\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-6946\" class=\"wp-image-6946 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newprocontainers.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/New-Rockafiller-Bed2-300x211.jpg\" alt=\"Rockafiller Bed\" width=\"300\" height=\"211\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.newprocontainers.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/New-Rockafiller-Bed2-300x211.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blog.newprocontainers.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/New-Rockafiller-Bed2-1024x721.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/blog.newprocontainers.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/New-Rockafiller-Bed2.jpg 1968w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-6946\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">-Rockafillers<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Although using natural rocks as a top dressing requires a little more strength, they still create different looks. Besides the popular brown hues of river rock, there are many more types available such as white marble, timberlite or granite.<\/p>\n<p>There is a downside to using rocks as a soil cover. But luckily there is an easy solution. When there is\u00a0a gap between the growing pot\u00a0and the decorative container,\u00a0the\u00a0rocks can be too small to bridge that gap and instead fall to the bottom.\u00a0This can be avoided with the use of a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.newprocontainers.com\/products\/adhesive-backed-foam-inserts-and-spacers\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">foam collar<\/a> specifically designed to combat\u00a0this issue. Another\u00a0option\u00a0is using a clear, strong adhesive to glue together small sections of rock that span the gap.<\/p>\n<h2>Glass Gems &amp; Recycled Glass<\/h2>\n<p>For some good drama (besides the love triangle at work), use\u00a0glass gems. They are uniformly round or oval\u00a0and can be readily found\u00a0at the dollar store. I like to\u00a0stock up on several colors.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-6783\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newprocontainers.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Recycled-Glass-011.jpg\" alt=\"Recycled Glass\" width=\"226\" height=\"226\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.newprocontainers.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Recycled-Glass-011.jpg 226w, https:\/\/blog.newprocontainers.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Recycled-Glass-011-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/blog.newprocontainers.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Recycled-Glass-011-102x102.jpg 102w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 226px) 100vw, 226px\" \/>Recycled glass is a similar option.\u00a0It is available in a few different sizes, shaped like broken rocks and can be ordered in many different colors. If you are creating a large bed of recycled glass, placing a waterproof string of rope lighting under the rock layer will add a whole different dimension of drama. I first used this concept\u00a0at a popular restaurant. The\u00a0serene ambiance it added to the dining room had patrons often requesting the tables near the glowing rocks&#8230;which unfortunately created one problem. Besides leaving the restaurant\u00a0full from a good meal, some\u00a0also left\u00a0with the \u201cmagical rocks\u201d as a souvenir. So if you decide to create a recycled glass top dressing, you may want to add a clear layer of glue to prevent the glass from disappearing.<\/p>\n<p>You can hide a plant\u2019s ugly soil with\u00a0any material your imagination comes up with, providing it doesn&#8217;t melt or collapse with water and isn&#8217;t harmful to people or\u00a0foliage. Taking a clue from the atmosphere\u00a0you are working with can lead to new ideas. For example, you can use corks at a wine bar, sea shells at\u00a0an ocean-side hotel or even bright ornaments during\u00a0the holiday season. The next time you start to pull out that Spanish moss, first take a look around.
