I know it\u2019s a crazy concept, but look, if you\u2019re a plant tech and you\u2019re not enjoying it, you\u2019re probably not going to be one very long. Plant care is a&nbsp;tough job, and there are lots of other things you could be doing to make money. However, if you like the interiorscape business, here are some things that helped me find personal satisfaction and reward in performing&nbsp;plant maintenance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>1. Take pleasure in the way your plants<\/strong> <strong>and accounts look. <\/strong>The whole point is beautiful plants! If they look beautiful, you can take credit for it,\u00a0and\u00a0that makes you feel good. If they don\u2019t look beautiful, fix them\u2014<em>then<\/em> you&#8217;ll feel good. There\u2019s a lot of joy to be found in something you do well.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>2. Avoid as much stress as possible.<\/strong> I know that stress happens, but if you\u2019re walking&nbsp;around feeling stressed out all the time, something needs to be addressed. Maybe you need to learn more about plant care,&nbsp;perhaps&nbsp;you need to discuss routing with your super, or maybe you just need to breathe. The point is that you shouldn&#8217;t be stressed all the time, so figure out the cause&nbsp;and do what you need to <em>fix the problem<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>3. Have all the tools and supplies you need, but don\u2019t take in <em>more<\/em> than you need.<\/strong> For instance, don\u2019t lug in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newprocontainers.com\/products\/waterboy-heavy-duty-metal-watering-machine-parent\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">watering machine<\/a> for an account with five plants\u2014it&#8217;s more hassle than help. And don&#8217;t forget to use your notebook when conducting plant maintenance. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newprocontainers.com\/blog\/keeping-journal-can-improve-plant-techs-performance\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Keeping good notes<\/a> and checking them before you start the day will help you know exactly what you will need for each account.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>4. Develop good routines and use them.<\/strong>&nbsp;My favorite routine consists of the following:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><em>Inspect<\/em>&nbsp;while walking toward the plant<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em>Feel<\/em>&nbsp;soil moisture<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em>Trim-turn-trim<\/em>&nbsp;(keep those eyes going; look for bugs and dead areas)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em>Water<\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em>Treat<\/em> if you\u2019ve seen&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.newprocontainers.com\/blog\/resources\/professionals-field-guide-plant-pest-control\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">pests<\/a>&nbsp;or pathogens<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em>Special work<\/em>\u00a0(i.e.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.newprocontainers.com\/products\/fiskars-reg-bypass-plant-pruner\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">prune<\/a>, fix\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.newprocontainers.com\/products\/reindeer-moss\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">top dressing<\/a>, etc.)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em>Clean<\/em>\u00a0the plant, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newprocontainers.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">plant container<\/a>, floor, table, etc.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em>Look back<\/em>&nbsp;as you walk away<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Also, along with all the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newprocontainers.com\/blog\/tips-for-techs-7-ways-to-make-plant-maintenance-more-efficient\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">efficiency<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newprocontainers.com\/blog\/tips-for-techs-8-ways-to-make-plant-maintenance-more-effective\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">effectiveness<\/a> tips, it\u2019s all about reducing stress and increasing satisfaction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>5. Don\u2019t work without a break. <\/strong>Even if you don\u2019t like to eat lunch (seems strange to me, but I\u2019ve heard it happens), <em>stop working and relax<\/em> for a while every day. It&#8217;s healthy to take a mental break once in a while.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>6. Learn about horticulture.<\/strong> The more you learn about plants, the happier you\u2019ll be, the more useful you\u2019ll be to your employers, and the more helpful you\u2019ll be to your interiorscape clients.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>7. Allow time for interaction with the people around you. <\/strong>You probably won\u2019t have time for long conversations, but a smile and a \u201chi\u201d go a long way. Listen politely to questions and try to answer in as clear and concise a way as you can, or promise to find the answer if you don\u2019t know it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>8. Be careful.<\/strong>&nbsp;Whether you are driving or walking, try to always be aware of things around you. Pay attention to your center of gravity, avoid sudden twists and precarious balance, and use caution when sticking fingers into soil. You never know what sharp objects may be in there. And let me tell you, getting cut and poked with random and sometimes scary objects is definitely not enjoyable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>9. Watch out for gremlins.<\/strong> We all know there are gremlins in the plants. Come on, how else can you&nbsp;explain the plant you spend 3 or 4 minutes cleaning and pruning suddenly sprouting a big yellow leaf right in plain sight when you look back at it 2 minutes later? So,<em> don\u2019t let those gremlins get you.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Well, I\u2019m finally at the end of my list of tips to make plant maintenance more enjoyable. While challenges are a given, embracing the right strategies and mindset can transform routine tasks into fulfilling experiences.
