10 Reasons I Love the Interiorscaping Industry

Sometimes it’s healthy to step back from the daily grind and get some perspective. Like any industry, interiorscaping comes with its share of challenges, but how often do we stop to appreciate the good stuff? From the relationships we build to the impact our work has on the spaces and people around us, there’s a lot to value. Here are ten reasons why I love being part of the interiorscaping industry.

1. Developing Personal Relationships

I appreciate the relationships we’re able to build with interiorscape clients, tenants, employees, and others in the communities we serve. Interiorscaping gives us opportunities to connect with people in ways that go beyond the plants and services we provide. Those relationships are one of the things I love most about being part of this industry.

2. Softening Interior Spaces

It’s amazing how interior plants can soften spaces that are hard by design. As magnificent as many of the interior spaces we work in are, living plants provide a natural contrast to the hard angles and materials of modern construction. That contrast can make even the most structured spaces feel more inviting and alive.

3. Supporting Mental Well-Being

I love that plants in the workplace can have a positive effect on people’s well-being. Our lives are immensely complicated and worrisome, and there’s something calming and inspirational about being surrounded by living plants. They also provide a welcome connection to nature during the workday.

4. Adding Beauty

The way interior plants add beauty to a space is incredible. Whether we’re working with foliage or flowering plants, living greenery brings natural beauty to the interiors we work in. And because plants grow and change over time, they add an ever-changing element to the space.

5. Contributing to the Economy

I appreciate the role our industry plays in supporting economic activity at the local, regional, and national levels. Interiorscaping is connected to a wide range of businesses, from growers and suppliers to the real estate and property management sectors. Our work is just one part of a broader network that supports businesses and communities in many different ways.

6. Creating Skilled Jobs

The fact that our industry creates jobs, particularly skilled ones, is highly rewarding. Just think of all the skills required to be successful in this business! From plant care and installation to design, sales, and customer service, interiorscaping brings together people with a wide range of talents and expertise.

7. Providing for Families

It’s fulfilling to see how families benefit from the work we do. For business owners, building a successful company can create wealth and opportunities for future generations. At the same time, the jobs our industry provides give employees the ability to support themselves and their families. It’s rewarding to know that the impact can extend well beyond the business itself.

8. Enhancing the Holidays

It’s satisfying to see how plants, lights, and other décor can transform the spaces we work in during Christmas, Hanukkah, and other holidays. Holiday installations give us an opportunity to do something a little different and create festive displays that bring the season into commercial spaces. Of course, I also appreciate the cash flow this generates!

9. Promoting Horticulture

I’m proud that our industry helps promote education and hands-on experience in horticulture. There’s tremendous value in passing along what we know about plants and giving others opportunities to learn by doing. That knowledge and experience can benefit our children, grandchildren, and future generations.

10. Creating Healthier Indoor Environments

Air quality is a real issue, especially in large metropolitan areas where much of our work takes place. Research continues to explore how plants and plant-based systems may play a role in healthier indoor spaces. It’s encouraging to see how much we’re still learning about the health and workplace benefits of plants.

Stop, take a deep breath, and appreciate all there is to love about the interiorscaping industry. Reflect on the positive impacts we make every day and the beauty and benefits plants bring to our lives and the lives of those around us. It’s worth remembering just how much there is to love about this work.
